Zurich, Bern and Basel
Zurich, the economic capital, offers its lake, the cobbled Niederdorf lanes, museums such as the Kunsthaus and the lively left bank of the Limmat. Bern, the federal capital, is UNESCO-listed for its old town with six kilometres of arcades. Basel, on the Rhine, excels in museums and comes alive each summer with concerts and swims in the river. Three cities, three atmospheres, three weekend ideas.
Lausanne, Lucerne and cultural scenes
On the French-speaking side, Lausanne tumbles down to Lake Geneva with its Gothic cathedral, Olympic Museum and the Flon district alive at night. Lucerne, in central Switzerland, charms with its covered Chapel Bridge, lake and world-class classical music festival. Picking a concert, sitting in the hall together and talking about it afterwards on the quays makes for a date that leaves lasting memories.
Festivals, Fête des Vignerons and lively scene
Every summer, Montreux Jazz draws the greatest voices to the shores of Lake Geneva. Roughly every twenty years, the UNESCO-listed Fête des Vignerons in Vevey celebrates the vine in a huge wooden arena. Between festivals, markets, clubs and cafés make up daily life. On Lyad, Swiss members share their favourite outings; it is up to you to find someone to slip into the crowd on a concert night.
